In this San Francisco Classical Voice review, Harlow Robinson covers a May 28 concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall, part of Gustavo Dudamel's final season as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The program paired Richard Strauss's grand tone poem Ein Heldenleben, which Dudamel led for the first time, with the world premiere of Mundillo, a piece for cello and orchestra by Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón, featuring soloist Yo-Yo Ma. Inspired by Puerto Rican lacemaking, Mundillo filled the stage with bird calls, drumming, splashing rain, and tiny music boxes, and while Robinson admired Yo-Yo Ma's committed playing, he found the new work colorful but chaotic and felt it underused the cello. For the second half he praised Dudamel and the orchestra for a dramatic and well-paced account of the Strauss, with rich strings and powerful brass.
