Doubt Makes Compelling Drama at Opera Parallèle

🎼 SF Classical Voice · June 6, 2026

In this San Francisco Classical Voice review, Lisa Hirsch praises Opera Parallèle's new chamber version of Doubt, the opera by composer Douglas J. Cuomo and librettist John Patrick Shanley based on Shanley's Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play. Set in a Bronx Catholic school, the story follows Sister Aloysius, a principal convinced that Father Flynn is behaving improperly with a student, while a younger teacher and the boy's mother remain unpersuaded, leaving the audience to wonder what, if anything, actually happened. Performed May 30 at San Francisco's Presidio Theater, this stripped-down staging pares the work to four singers and an orchestra of 14, which Hirsch found taut, focused, and intense. She admired Cuomo's eclectic, finely colored score and a uniformly strong cast with remarkably clear diction, under Nicole Paiement's conducting and Brian Staufenbiel's naturalistic direction.
