Writer Yiyun Li lost both of her sons. When words fell short, she turned to music

NPR's Terry Gross talks with Yiyun Li about her new novel, Music Against the Night, and about the deaths of her two sons. Li grew up in China, served a year in the Chinese military, came to the US to study immunology and left her PhD to write. She now teaches creative writing at Princeton. Both her sons died by suicide, Vincent in 2017 at 16 and James in 2024 at 19, losses she recorded in her memoir Things in Nature Merely Grow, which won the Pulitzer Prize. Li avoids the word grief and speaks instead of an abyss in which she expects to remain. The new novel, set in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, follows two prodigies brought together by music and separated by their ambitions. She says she chose music because words naturally fall short of it, and that writing about the past let her turn it into a new present. Li began piano lessons at the end of 2023, two months before James died, and describes practice as a way of counting time and staying in touch with the world. She remembers James as extraordinarily odd and brilliant, and Vincent as a painter, oboist and poet. Photo: Librairie Mollat, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons.

عکس از Librairie Mollat، CC BY 3.0، Wikimedia Commons.
