The French Prog Classic That Barely Escaped Oblivion

Bandcamp Daily tells the long, unlucky story of Instant, a French progressive rock band whose only album, recorded in 1978, is finally out in 2026. Violinist and composer Jean Cortes and bassist Daniel Sirvent formed the group in Toulon in 1976, borrowing elements of zeuhl, the style launched by Magma, such as wordless female voices, Fender Rhodes piano and drumming close to Christian Vander's, while also drawing on Chick Corea, George Duke, Stravinsky and Manuel de Falla. Unisons of violin and clarinet gave them their own color. They paid for sessions at L'Oiseau Musicien, the Alpes de Haute Provence studio of Jean Roché, known for his birdsong recordings, and his birds appear on one track. A Paris producer took on the record, the band moved to the capital in 1980 and the vinyl was pressed in 1981, but a fire at his offices and his bankruptcy killed the release. The band left several hundred copies behind and split in 1983. A copy kept by a member became the source for the Guerssen Records reissue, which adds new recordings of the songs by Cortes and as many original members as he could gather.

Wikimedia Commons.
