In this opinion piece for American Theatre, Mary Rose Lloyd, the longtime artistic director of New York's New Victory Theater, argues for breaking down the borders that separate theatre for young audiences from work for adults, and that separate American theatre from the wider world. Drawing on three decades of traveling to see Theatre for Young Audiences abroad, she observes that many countries subsidize the arts generously, freeing their artists to make bold and imaginative work for children rather than safe commercial adaptations. She calls for US theatre training programs to treat young audiences as essential and to integrate that work into their curricula, and she describes her own efforts to bring more international productions to American stages, including an upcoming staging of The Sorcerer's Apprentice from Northern Ireland's Cahoots NI. Her central point is that young people everywhere deserve to be challenged and awestruck, and that introducing children to theatre helps create lifelong audiences and deeper compassion.
