The Organ Takes Center Stage at SF Symphony

🎼 SF Classical Voice · July 4, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #10

In a review by Collin Ziegler, San Francisco Classical Voice covers the San Francisco Symphony's latest concert at Davies Symphony Hall, a program that placed the mighty Ruffatti Concert Organ at center stage. Commissioned for the hall from the Fratelli Ruffatti workshop in Padua, Italy, the instrument's more than 8,000 pipes made it North America's largest concert organ when installed in 1984, yet for decades it has rarely been heard. Stéphane Denève conducted, with Olivier Latry, the celebrated organist of Notre-Dame de Paris, at the console. The program opened with Guillaume Connesson's symphonic poem "Flammenschrift," a tribute to Beethoven, and continued with Francis Poulenc's Organ Concerto and Camille Saint-Saëns's Symphony No. 3, the "Organ." The critic stresses that the concert presented the organ not as a merely ecclesiastical or decorative instrument but as a colorful, powerful, transformative force within the orchestra. In the Poulenc concerto, written in 1938 as the composer returned to his Catholic faith, the organ was theatrical and at times aggressive, a voice moving among religious shadows, driving energy, and dark interludes, its fanfares recalling Bach's Fantasia and Fugue. In the Saint-Saëns, the organ became part of the orchestral fabric itself: an entrance so quiet it slips in unnoticed, then suddenly changes the music's color and depth, merging strings, winds, and pipes, in the critic's words, into a heavenly tower of sound no orchestra could build alone. For Ziegler, Denève and Latry, who shaped every note with character and energy, proved that the Davies Hall organ is more than an enormous, underused instrument; placed at the heart of a program, it can make familiar music feel unfamiliar again, alive and unpredictable.
