In a review by Steven Winn, San Francisco Classical Voice covers San Francisco Opera's second annual Pride Concert, an evening that was both a colorful celebration and a reminder of the urgency such gatherings carry. Held June 26 at the War Memorial Opera House, the concert blended opera, pop, jazz, drag, rainbow lighting, and theatrical costumes into a night both exuberant and meaningful. The program opened with "Agnegram," the orchestral romp by the late Michael Tilson Thomas, conducted with spirit by Robert Mollicone; general director Matthew Shilvock recalled Thomas as one of the first music directors of a major American orchestra to live his identity openly, and noted that this year's celebration arrives at a time when many rights and identities are under pressure, a context that lifted the evening beyond mere festivity into a moment of resolve, remembrance, and solidarity. Among the vocal highlights, Nikola Printz heightened the evening's dramatic register with the farewell aria from Gounod's "Sapho," while Melody Moore's powerhouse rendition of Brandi Carlile's "The Joke," which the critic calls flat-out fantastic, gave the night a tone of defiance and hope. Reginald Smith Jr. brought grandeur, sorrow, and optimism to works by Michael Abels, Terence Blanchard, and Tracy Chapman. One of the evening's pleasures was hearing the three principals cross between worlds, unmiked in the operatic numbers and miked for pop and jazz, as the Opera Orchestra shifted from sensitive accompanist to bouncy big band. Sapphira Cristál of "RuPaul's Drag Race" emceed, binding the program together with humor, energy, and one show-stopping costume after another. For the critic, the concert's real achievement lay in setting differences side by side: opera and pop, earnestness and play, ache and dance. The result was a night that presented Pride not merely as a party but as a spectrum of human experience; honest, playful, dazzling, vulnerable, and necessary.
