NPR revisits Dave Davies’s 2012 interview with Peter Heller as Ridley Scott’s film adaptation of The Dog Stars prepares for release. Before writing the novel, Heller was best known for nonfiction about adventure and the outdoors, and he says he began the book without even knowing it would become a post-apocalyptic story. The Dog Stars follows Hig, a survivor of a devastating pandemic who lives at a small Colorado airport with his dog Jasper and a heavily armed companion named Bangley. Much of the novel draws on Heller’s own experience. He is a pilot, knows the real airport that inspired the setting, and has taken part in demanding expeditions, including a journey through a remote river gorge in Tibet. Yet Heller says the novel is not simply about survival. Bangley is focused on staying alive through discipline and constant vigilance, while Hig continues to search for joy, beauty, memory, and a reason to live. That contrast between mere survival and the need to remain connected to what one loves is at the heart of the novel.
The Dog Stars
