Poster of the Week: The Film Posters of David Lance Goines

🎬 MUBI Notebook · August 24, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #17

Adrian Curry looks at the film posters of David Lance Goines, the celebrated Bay Area artist and printmaker best known for his work for Chez Panisse. Between 1972 and 1983, Goines designed and printed 24 posters for screenings at the Pacific Film Archive at UC Berkeley, beginning with an informal collaboration with programmer Tom Luddy, who later co-founded the Telluride Film Festival. Goines’s style drew heavily on the Arts and Crafts movement, William Morris, and art nouveau, but his posters were more restrained, symmetrical, and typographically legible than the psychedelic graphics associated with late-1960s San Francisco. His first film poster was for Josef von Sternberg’s The Blue Angel, and he later created designs for films including Nosferatu, Faust, The General, M, Pandora’s Box, and Parsifal. Curry shows how Goines often avoided literal representations of the films, instead drawing on personal memories, art history, and unexpected visual associations. Over his lifetime he produced more than 250 posters, and his archive of more than 5,000 items is now held by UC Berkeley’s Bancroft Library.
