The Creator of “Watchmen” Takes On the Green Lantern

🎬 RogerEbert.com · August 17, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #16

Reviewing "Lanterns," which premiered on HBO on Sunday, August 16, Brian Tallerico calls it a successful and highly watchable opening season, a show that puts the relationship between its two leads ahead of superpowers. It was co-created by Damon Lindelof, who made "Watchmen" and "The Leftovers," with Chris Mundy and the comics writer Tom King, and Tallerico notes it was reportedly inspired by "True Detective" and "Slow Horses." The story moves between 1996, 2016 and 2026, with most of the first season set in 2016, where Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) are drawn into a shooting in Rushville, Nebraska that Jordan becomes convinced involves visitors from another world. Kelly Macdonald plays the small town's lawwoman, and Nathan Fillion turns up in a few scenes, continuing his role from the film "Superman." Jordan here is a tired, cynical, worn-down hero, while Stewart is disciplined and calculating: Jordan acts, Tallerico writes, and Stewart plans. The rivalry between them comes from Jordan's suspicion that Stewart is not an alternate but a replacement. The third episode looks at that difference through race: Jordan was chosen for being fearless, a word that carries another meaning for young Black men in this country, while Stewart has had to fight his way to the same position. Tallerico also points to weaknesses, chiefly a tendency to over-explain the show's themes and dialogue that turns heavy-handed. Even so, the unpredictable shape of the season and the attention paid to the human side of its heroes keep "Lanterns" clear of the usual superhero formula. Seven episodes were screened for review.
