Symphony San Jose opened its silver anniversary season on October 3 at the California Theatre in San José. Michael Zwiebach writes in SF Classical Voice that the orchestra, formed in 2002 out of the ashes of the San Jose Symphony, has kept many of its original musicians and built a loyal audience. When executive artistic director Robert Massey asked those who had attended the first concert to stand, many did. The orchestra has never had a music director, yet the critic says it plays with a secure, well-balanced sound. Guest conductor Ken-David Masur, in his debut with the orchestra, opened with the suite from Aaron Copland's "Billy the Kid", and the players handled its syncopations well. Pianist Joyce Yang was the soloist in Jonathan Leshnoff's "Rhapsody on America", a new co-commission built as variations on "My Country, 'Tis of Thee". Zwiebach praises Yang but calls the piece underwhelming, with flat orchestration and nothing to surprise the ear.
