A Brief History of Iconic Women Spies in the Comics

LitHub has published an excerpt by Susan Kirtley and Nhora Lucia Serrano on women spies in American comics. Señorita Rio first appeared in Fight Comics #19 in June 1942, created by writer Joe Hawkins and artist Nick Viscardi for the publisher Fiction House. In the story, Rita Farrar is a Hollywood actress of Latin American heritage whose fiancé, a naval officer, is killed at Pearl Harbor. She fakes her own death, joins the intelligence service and fights the Axis powers across South America until 1950. The character is most closely associated with the artist Lily Renée. Born in Austria in 1921, Renée fled on the Kindertransport, later rejoined her parents in the United States and drew the series from 1944 to 1947. She signed her work "L. Renée", and many readers took her for a man. She entered the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2007 and died in New York in 2022 at the age of 101. The authors also discuss Sanjak, a spy and master of disguise who appeared in Milton Caniff's strip "Terry and the Pirates" in 1939. She worked only for herself and is widely credited as the first lesbian character in comics, something Caniff could only suggest through coded details such as her monocle and men's suits.

Will Eisner Hall of Fame عکس از Bundesministerium für Europa, Integration und Äußeres، CC BY 2.0، Wikimedia Commons.
