NYFF 2026: Bardi, Heil Jupiter!

Clint Worthington writes on RogerEbert.com that this year's New York Film Festival has one of its strongest lineups in ages. Many titles came from Cannes, Toronto, Venice or Locarno, and his highlights include James Gray's "Paper Tiger", Pawel Pawlikowski's "Fatherland" and a 35mm screening of Ken Russell's "The Devils". He then turns to two films that drew less notice. The first is Tala Hadid's "Bardi", about Tbourida, a centuries-old Moroccan ritual in which groups of horsemen race in formation with rifles held aloft. Hadid spent four years among riders in rural Morocco, and her film blurs the line between documentary and fiction. It follows a brother worried about his younger brother's skill, a father who wants to pass the tradition on, a girl who bristles at being kept from it and a boy with a horse allergy. The critic finds the pace sometimes too relaxed but the images gorgeous, and he praises Hadid for seeing beauty and fellowship in the tradition rather than male aggression. The second film is Carlos Reygadas's "Heil Jupiter!", shot on several continents and in many languages. At 158 minutes, Worthington finds it deliberately vulgar, opaque and without thematic cohesion.

Wikimedia Commons.
