2026 Busan Preview: 10 Films We Can’t Wait to See

The Busan International Film Festival, founded in 1995, arrives this year with new weight. Robert Daniels writes on RogerEbert.com that the Academy has named Busan's main competition among a handful of festival programs whose winner automatically qualifies to compete for Best International Film, even without being its country's official selection. The others are Cannes, Venice, Sundance's World Cinema and TIFF's Platform. The Busan competition is only in its second year, and Zhang Lü's "Gloaming in Luomu" won the first. Thirteen films compete this year, from Japan, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Iran and South Korea, and 24 more screen in the Vision-Asia and Vision-Korea sections for newer voices. Among the ten titles Daniels singles out is "Midday Meal" by the Iranian director Majid Majidi. According to the festival's synopsis, Solan is the only teacher in a parched village. When the benefactor who paid for the school's meals dies, he gives up his home, moves into the school and begins smuggling oil at night so that the students keep coming. The festival says Majidi shows this world with unflinching rawness. Other picks include "The First Taste of Loneliness", "Hilol", "Ibuku" with Christine Hakim and "Silver Express" by Tanaka Miki.

«The First Taste of Loneliness»، «Hilol»، «Ibuku» با بازی کریستین حکیم و «Silver Express» ساختهٔ تاناکا میکی از دیگر فیلم‌های برگزیدهٔ اوست.
