Steve Reich on the joy of discovery at 90

Composer Steve Reich turned 90 on October 3, and Cal Performances planned an all-Reich birthday concert at Zellerbach Auditorium on October 24 with Bang on a Can All-Stars and Ensemble Signal, including the West Coast premiere of his new In All Your Ways. Jim Farber spoke with him for SF Classical Voice from his home in Pound Ridge, New York. Reich says he still has moments of surprise while composing, as when a new metric shift appeared in the new piece, set to a line from Proverbs. He describes a fall in April that cracked a rib and broke his right wrist, which still hurts when he works at the keyboard. He recalls the standing ovation for the first performances of Music for 18 Musicians by his own ensemble, and explains how Different Trains grew from childhood train journeys between his divorced parents and from interviews with Holocaust survivors. He traces his love of rhythm to jazz drumming at 14 and says his baseball caps come from the Jewish tradition of covering the head. Photo by Bernard Gotfryd, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.

Bang on a Can All-Stars و Ensemble Signal تدارک دیده بود که نخستین اجرای اثر تازه‌اش «In All Your Ways» در ساحل غربی را هم در بر داشت. Wikimedia Commons
