Elim Chan, named in May as the San Francisco Symphony's next music director and its first woman in the post, returned to Walt Disney Concert Hall on October 16 to conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Harlow Robinson reviews the concert for SF Classical Voice. Chan, 39, a former Dudamel Fellow with the orchestra, led with a vigorous manner and an easy rapport with the players, he writes. The program opened with the world premiere of Dance Card by Korean composer Donghoon Shin, an LA Phil commission that takes the waltz apart with duple time, a rattling sheet of aluminum foil and echoes of rap and house music. Yefim Bronfman played Liszt's Second Piano Concerto, last heard there in 2015, with restraint and lyricism rather than fireworks. The second half was Chan's own suite from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake: the Act 2 swan theme with a fine oboe solo by Marion Arthur Kuszyk, the Act 1 birthday music, a waltz and the tragic finale.
