Messiaen’s From the Canyons to the Stars under a desert sky

San Diego's Art of Elan marked its 20th anniversary on October 12 with an outdoor performance of Olivier Messiaen's Des canyons aux etoiles in Borrego Springs, less than 36 hours after Tropical Storm Rachel soaked the desert town. Jim Farber reviews it for SF Classical Voice. About 250 people gathered at the Stargazing Theater of La Casa del Zorro Resort as the storm cleared and the Milky Way appeared. Messiaen wrote the 12-movement work in the 1970s on a commission from Alice Tully for the American bicentennial, inspired by Cedar Breaks, Bryce Canyon and Zion in Utah. The organization's director, Kate Hatmaker, partnered with UC San Diego and conductor and percussionist Steven Schick, whose graduate students played percussion. Farber praises Schick's precise conducting, pianist Conor Hanick's marathon solo part and Danielle Ondarza's horn solo, Interstellar Call. Without amplification the sound was less rich than in a hall, he writes, but hearing the work in a landscape like the one that inspired it was transcendent.

Wikimedia Commons
