Cappella Romana sings Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil in a liturgical setting

Portland's chorus Cappella Romana, which specializes in Byzantine and Slavic sacred music, visited San Francisco's Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church to sing Sergei Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil. Oakland composer and baritone Jens Ibsen reviews it for SF Classical Voice. Rachmaninoff wrote the work in two weeks in 1915 for a wartime benefit, and because of Soviet suppression of Orthodox rites it was first recorded only in 1965. It usually lives in the concert hall, but Cappella Romana framed it with the plainchant of the three services it draws on, including a new chant by its conductor, John Michael Boyer. Ibsen praises the bright trebles, agile tenors and powerful low basses, among them Glenn Miller, and alto Kerry McCarthy's solo. He calls the Nunc Dimittis and the Ave Maria astonishing and says the choir met the demanding Great Doxology with ease. The evening ended with the audience joining in the Ave Maria, which, in the critic's words, returned the work to its populist roots.

Wikimedia Commons
