Masao Adachi: Demystifying a Legend

In MUBI Notebook, William Andrews, author of the new book Pink Auteur, Red Outlaw, argues that the Japanese director Masao Adachi is widely misunderstood. Born in Kyushu in 1939, Adachi rose in Tokyo's underground film scene, wrote and directed erotic "pink" films for Koji Wakamatsu's company, and later joined the Japanese Red Army in the Middle East. He was arrested in Beirut in 1997 and went back to filmmaking in Japan after 2001. Andrews says this notoriety hides the subtlety of the films, and he proposes reading Adachi as a surrealist rather than as a guerrilla filmmaker. According to the writer, early works such as Sex Game and Female Student Guerrilla, both from 1969, mock people in power as much as misguided radicals. He adds that there is no public evidence of Adachi's direct part in violence, and that trial testimony described his role as planning and publicity. Because his passport applications are always refused, Adachi cannot attend festivals abroad. Andrews finds Kamal Aljafari's new short, Masao Adachi Takes a Passport Photo (2026), truer to the man than Philippe Grandrieux's 2011 documentary, and describes a playful filmmaker whose work is mostly bawdy and parodic.

Wikimedia Commons
