San Francisco Opera opened Massenet's Manon on October 15 for a seven-performance run at the War Memorial Opera House, in Vincent Boussard's production first seen there in 2017. In SF Classical Voice, critic Steven Winn writes that the evening takes nearly an hour to reach its first moving moment and feels long at three and a half hours. He blames a bleak set of mirrors, angled panels and shuffled chairs that works against the opera's busy storytelling. The cast is led by the real-life couple Amina Edris and Pene Pati, both alumni of the company's training programs. Winn calls Pati the vocal star, praising his radiant Dream aria and his seminary scene in the third act, where his softest notes ring out clearly. He finds Edris bright but less immersed in the role, and singles out bass James Cresswell as Des Grieux's father. Music Director Eun Sun Kim conducts.
