Ellis Ludwig-Leone’s Quiet Hours, a hopeful experiment

Composer and pianist Ellis Ludwig-Leone, known for his work with the Attacca and JACK quartets, New York City Ballet and the band San Fermin, has released his first solo piano album, Quiet Hours, on Better Company Records, the label he co-founded. Collin Ziegler, a musicology doctoral student at UC Berkeley, reviews it for SF Classical Voice. The album holds nine nocturnes, each written for a different pianist and recorded on an instrument that feels like home, often in the player's own house, among them Timo Andres, David Kaplan, Simone Dinnerstein and Adam Tendler. Ziegler praises the vivid, orchestral colors and the patchwork style that recalls Charles Ives, but finds a creeping sameness, with phrases melting into one another and little shape for the listener to hold. He singles out Trois Allumettes, played by the composer, as the most memorable piece. Ziegler calls the project's mission a good one and says the experiment points in hopeful directions.

Wikimedia Commons
