September’s Best Reviewed Nonfiction

Book Marks, Lit Hub's book review section, has listed the five nonfiction titles that drew the strongest reviews in September. First is Jon Ronson's "The Castle" (Riverhead). Sinead Gibney of The Irish Times notes it is his first book in 11 years and says it tries to unpick modern masculinity and the mental health crisis among men. Second is "American Scoundrel" by Kai Bird with Susan Goldmark (Scribner), which follows Roy Cohn from the Joe McCarthy years to Donald Trump. Laura Miller of Slate calls it riveting and full of astonishing twists and last-minute escapes from justice. Third is Doireann Ni Ghriofa's "Said the Dead" (FSG), which Joelle Egan of Booklist describes as a blend of documented history and imaginative reconstruction about women deprived of freedom and agency. Fourth is Emily Wilson's "Crossing the Wine-Dark Sea" (Liveright), on ancient literature. Jennifer Szalai of The New York Times writes that Wilson weaves line-by-line readings together with larger arguments. Fifth is Ben Macintyre's "Redwood" (Crown), about a Cold War spy. Joseph Finer of The New York Times Book Review says Macintyre has again turned government archives into a propulsive nonfiction thriller. Photo: Simon Williams-Im, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons.
