September’s Best Reviewed Fiction

Book Marks, Lit Hub's book review section, has listed the five works of fiction that drew the strongest reviews in September. First is Marlon James's "The Disappearers" (Riverhead), with 17 rave, four positive and two mixed reviews. Hamilton Cain of The Boston Globe writes that James invents his own literary language and jolts the narrative sideways and backwards. Second is Emily St. John Mandel's "Exit Party" (Knopf), with 18 raves. Lincoln Michel of The New York Times Book Review says the novel runs on two timelines and joins the thrills of the author's early crime novels to the expansive premises of later books such as "Station Eleven." Third is Emma Cline's "Switzy" (Random House). Ron Charles, writing on Substack, says the reader seems to watch a mind decaying. Fourth is Kate Atkinson's "Our Noble Selves" (Doubleday). Sam Sacks of The Wall Street Journal calls it a historical farce and rates Atkinson alongside Ian McEwan. Fifth is Rebecca Perry's "May We Feed the King" (Transit Books). Melissa Harrison of The Guardian writes that the novel asks readers to admit that almost nothing can be known about history. Photo: Victuallers, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons.
