Remake, Remodel, Remarket: Disney’s Live-Action Cycle

In MUBI's Notebook, Mark Asch argues that Disney's live-action remakes of its animated films trap audiences in a cycle of nostalgia and diminishing returns. He links the cycle, which began with Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella in 2015, to business needs. Streaming ended Disney's old practice of limiting access to its 'vault', so the company keeps old titles alive by remaking them with stars, new subplots and updated messages. Asch contrasts the remakes with classic Disney animation, where broad comic characters such as the dwarfs and Cinderella's mice carried the story. The new films add backstory and motivation instead. He criticises the rubbery digital companions of the 2025 Snow White and calls the 2020 Mulan's handling of representation cynical. Jon Favreau's The Lion King, he writes, is impressive but even less expressive than his Jungle Book. He finds Robert Zemeckis's Pinocchio the most interesting film of the cycle. This year's Moana, the first remake of a 3D animated film, follows its original almost shot by shot, and Asch asks who such films are for. Photo by NASA, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.

Wikimedia Commons
