Bumper-to-Bumper Traffic: TIFF’s Pre-Show Ads

In MUBI's Notebook, Vadim Rizov looks at the short ads and skits that play before screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival, and at what they reveal about how the festival sees its audience. He compares festivals. Cannes shows only a computer-made red-carpet staircase, which he reads as a display of financial strength, while Tribeca fills the time with commercials. Toronto runs no ads before public screenings but plenty after the introduction. Rizov singles out a new ad for a TIFF 50/50 raffle that promises chances to meet celebrities. He calls it tone-deaf at a time of growing concern about betting in the US. He finds the Rogers ads the weakest. Directed by Chandler Levack, they include festival CEO Cameron Bailey joking about a Béla Tarr phase. The volunteer skits, he argues, encourage contempt for fellow viewers. Rizov concludes that rising prices and shrinking access mean TIFF has not been 'the people's festival' for some time.

عکس از Richie Diesterheft from Santa Barbara, CA, USA، CC BY 2.0، Wikimedia Commons
