Greek National Opera brings a portrait of Crete to Carnegie Hall

In SF Classical Voice, New York writer and oboist Katelyn Simone reviews the Greek National Opera's Carnegie Hall debut on October 15, a program called Nikos Kazantzakis: An Odyssey in Music. Conducted by Vassilis Christopoulos, it traced the sound of Crete through five Greek composers, with Kazantzakis as the link. Dimitri Mitropoulos's Cretan Feast and three Cretan Dances by Nikos Skalkottas opened the evening, followed by the US premiere of Giorgos Koumendakis's Amor Fati, in which three vibraphones stand in for the Cretan lute. Simone found that piece the clearest musical image of freedom. Soprano Maria Kostraki and the Manos Hadjidakis Ensemble then sang Hadjidakis's cycle on the novel Captain Michalis. The critic regrets that no texts or subtitles were provided and that the concert ran nearly two and a half hours. It ended with Mikis Theodorakis's Zorbas suite, sung in part by mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili, as the hall clapped along. SF Classical Voice notes that the company paid for the writer's travel to Greece in September. Photo by Syrio, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons.

Wikimedia Commons
