In American Theatre, Chicago dramaturg Yasmin Zacaria Mikhaiel asks Iranian theatre artists in the United States how they are working, or not working, during the war that began in February. Playwright Sanaz Toossi says the brutality Iranians face under the Islamic Republic has been constant for 47 years. She admits she was angry at parts of the diaspora and now doubts how useful her public anger was. Theatre artist and singer Melory Mirashrafi, who directed Toossi's English in Boston, says such projects now feel hollow to her. She has stepped back from theatre to make music with her band Chera Chera, yet she calls art-making an act of defiance. Deniz Khateri, who made theatre in Tehran, stayed in the US in 2022 to honour an artists' strike. Nahal Navidar describes her guilt as her play The Unknown Variable opened in Chicago in January 2026, during mass protests in Iran. هنرمندان تئاتر ایرانی در مهاجرت، میان سوگ و آفرینش
