In Literary Hub, Nina Chayka writes about her search for rare Ardis paperbacks of Vladimir Nabokov. The essay opens in Brooklyn in the late 2010s, when she found Nabokov's first novel, Mashenka, in a dollar bin and the cashier refused to sell it, calling it a rare collector's edition. Chayka then tells the story of Ardis. Ellendea and Carl Proffer, professors of Russian at the University of Michigan, founded the press in Ann Arbor in 1971 after a six-month trip to the Soviet Union, where they collected unpublished and suppressed manuscripts. They named it after Nabokov's Ada or Ardor and printed small runs from their home. Ardis published the first unabridged English translation of The Master and Margarita, facsimile editions of Nabokov's novels, and work by Joseph Brodsky and Sasha Sokolov. After it published the uncensored anthology Metropol in 1979, the Proffers were banned from the Soviet Union. Carl died in 1982, and Ellendea ran Ardis for many more years. Today, Chayka writes, Nabokov titles sell for high three-figure prices, and she still hopes to find an affordable Mashenka in a used bookstore.
Wikimedia Commons
