Grimes’s Secret Psy Opera Pop-Up

In The Paris Review, Paul McAdory reports on a surprise DJ set that Grimes played on October 10 in the backyard of Singers, a gay cocktail bar in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. The event was announced online the same day and was linked to Psy Opera, her first album in more than six years. McAdory describes a crowd that liked her music but was wary of her, citing her past alliance with Elon Musk and her techno-optimism. Before the set he spoke with Grimes. She said the album tries to capture the feeling of being pushed into the future by fast technological change, a feeling she called both terrible and exciting. She described the lead single, 'Accelerando', as probably the worst song on the album, while calling the record her masterwork. She also said she is planning a manifesto, tentatively titled 'Gesserit', about the moral education of Gen Z. On stage she played only two or three of her own songs and mostly older hits by other artists. According to McAdory, the crowd's doubts seemed to fade once the music began.

عکس از Phillip Nguyen، CC BY 2.0، Wikimedia Commons
