Movie Poster of the Week | F.W. Murnau’s “Faust”

In his Movie Poster of the Week column for MUBI Notebook, Adrian Curry marks the centenary of F. W. Murnau's Faust. MUBI Editions and the Cinémathèque française are publishing The Faust Bible, a recreation of a scrapbook of drawings and photographs that Murnau's crew bound inside a prop Bible and gave him before he left for Hollywood. Long thought lost, it was rediscovered and restored by the Cinémathèque. MUBI has also commissioned a new poster from MUBI Lab, printed on bronze paper, for a limited release. Curry then traces the film's poster history. In 1926 UFA held a competition that drew 359 designs; the first prize went to Berlin printmaker Karl Michel for a woodcut-style image of Faust healing a dying man under the horsemen of War, Plague and Death, with no sign of Mephisto, played by Emil Jannings. The trade paper Film-Kurier condemned the entries as amateurish, yet Michel's poster now sits in the Museum of Modern Art. Curry also covers a premiere booklet of Gerhart Hauptmann's rejected intertitles, American posters that put a cartoonish Mephisto up front, and later reuses by Eureka and Kino Lorber.

Wikimedia Commons.
