Anne Rice’s ‘Interview with the Vampire’ turns 50

NPR's Fresh Air marks 50 years since Anne Rice's debut novel Interview with the Vampire by rebroadcasting Terry Gross's 1990 conversation with the author, introduced by Dave Davies. Rice began the book in 1972 to work through her grief after her 5-year-old daughter died of leukemia, and it became a hit in 1976, followed by more than a dozen Vampire Chronicles novels. In the interview Rice says she lost her faith early, but her Catholic upbringing in New Orleans left a spiritual urgency that she could voice only through a vampire narrator. She admits to being afraid of the dark and open-minded about the occult. Her vampires, she explains, can be hurt by the sun but ignore garlic and crucifixes, and live in an existential world full of doubt. She links a darkening in her work, especially The Witching Hour, to friends lost to AIDS, recalls films such as Dracula's Daughter and Bride of Frankenstein, and talks about the erotic books she wrote as A. N. Roquelaure. Rice died in 2021; Penguin Classics has just published a 50th anniversary edition. Photo: Anne Rice, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.

«Interview with the Vampire»

Wikimedia Commons.
