There is Always a Different Story to Discover: Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Curator Ryan Linkof

RogerEbert.com visits the new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles and talks with curator Ryan Linkof. The museum, founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, collects art that tells stories: paintings by illustrators such as N.C. Wyeth, Norman Rockwell, Frank Frazetta and Maxfield Parrish, comics from Winsor McCay to Charles Schulz and Jack Kirby, a Frida Kahlo, Banksy's girl with a balloon and the Cowardly Lion costume from The Wizard of Oz. About seven percent of the collection relates to Star Wars. A ground-floor exhibition traces 30,000 years of storytelling images, from cave painting to Renaissance frescoes. The building is by architect Ma Yansong, and its two cinemas are named for the documentary pioneer Robert Flaherty and the montage artist Slavko Vorkapich. Lucas told guests that this is not fine art but "finer art". Linkof, who joined in 2018 after work at LACMA and the Academy Museum, says labels are kept short so visitors can form their own response, with a digital guide for more. He names Cassius Coolidge's 1894 A Pat Hand, the painting that began the "Dogs Playing Poker" series, as a surprise favorite, and says printed paper works are the hardest to preserve.

Wikimedia Commons.
