Mohsen Gharaei’s “Moragheb,” Starring Farhad Aslani, at the Venice Film Festival

In his latest Venice Film Festival dispatch for RogerEbert.com, Pulitzer finalist Matt Zoller Seitz calls Mohsen Gharaei's Moragheb (Falling House) lean, focused, and powerful, a film that is the sum of its many influences and as good as the best of them. It follows a family in suburban Tehran whose house is days away from demolition in a redevelopment project, and whom bad luck and poor judgment have left with nowhere to go. The father, Rashid, played by Farhad Aslani, is a guard on a prison's death row and, in Seitz's words, not only serves the ruling powers but embodies them. His elder daughter, Ensi, played by Laleh Marzban, has secretly sent headshots to foreign modeling agencies and has an interview in Istanbul. Her father's response moves from sadness to bluster to locking her in her room until she surrenders her passport. Seitz places the film in the tradition of 1990s Iranian neorealism, alongside Kiarostami, Panahi, Makhmalbaf, and Majidi, and beside the kitchen-sink dramas of Arthur Miller and John Osborne: a domestic drama that is also a political one, in which women of independent spirit become prisoners of the man meant to protect them. He calls the final stretch both tragic and cathartic. In the same dispatch, Seitz finds Danny Boyle's Ink, with Guy Pearce as Rupert Murdoch and Jack O'Connell as journalist Larry Lamb, dazzling in form but untrustworthy with history, and praises Robert Greene's Too Much Sugar, in which two formerly incarcerated men make films of their own lives, as a powerful reminder of art's capacity for recognition and healing.
