Mohsen Amiryousefi turns a career of bans into autofiction in ‘The Banning Curse’

Iranian director Mohsen Amiryousefi's new film, The Banning Curse, had its world premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival on October 14, but he and his editor Kamy Saffari could not attend after the UK rejected their visa applications, The Hollywood Reporter reports. The festival describes the film as satirical autofiction about the ups and downs of radical filmmaking. Amiryousefi, whose debut Bitter Dream received a special mention for the Camera d'Or at Cannes and was then banned in Iran, appears on screen for the first time, talking with the Angel of Death, a figure present in his films since that first feature. Mixing biography, constructed fiction and archive footage, the film weaves his life into Iran's political, social and cultural history. It was shot indoors, without permits and on a small budget. Amiryousefi, 54, says the references to Fellini, Christopher Nolan and Abbas Kiarostami are deliberate, and he expects audiences in Iran to find the film through online screenings and streaming despite the long ban on his work.

عکس از Hamed Malekpour، CC BY 4.0، Wikimedia Commons.
