Locarno 2026: You Don’t Belong Here, Who Is Still Alive, Sixteen Moments of My Life, Letter From My Village

Robert Daniels’ final dispatch from the 2026 Locarno Film Festival brings together four very different films linked by resistance to hatred, discrimination, and erasure. Florin Șerban’s You Don’t Belong Here, winner of the Golden Leopard, unfolds in a small Romanian town where a racist attack against the Romani community gradually exposes toxic masculinity, parental failure, and social indifference. Nicolas Wadimoff’s Who Is Still Alive is a documentary about ten Palestinians from Gaza who escaped to Egypt before the Rafah border closed and recount the destruction of their homes, the deaths of family members, and the experience of exile. Albert Serra’s Sixteen Moments of My Life records a Paris performance by German singer and actress Ingrid Caven, a longtime collaborator of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and turns what might have been a conventional concert film into a study of presence, music, memory, and performance. The fourth film, Safi Faye’s Letter From My Village, was shown in a restored 2K version. The landmark Senegalese work explores drought, poverty, migration, and structural inequality through the story of a young man who leaves his village for Dakar in search of work. Daniels sees all four films as examples of a cinema that resists easy definition and insists on the freedom to tell difficult stories on its own terms.

You Don’t Belong Here Who Is Still Alive Sixteen Moments of My Life
