Gorgeous Platformer Duskfade Has Echoes of Kingdom Hearts

Brian Tallerico sees Duskfade as a 3D action platformer clearly indebted to Kingdom Hearts and PlayStation 2 era games such as Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank. The story follows Zirian, whose sister is trapped inside a Clock Tower after reality has fractured, forcing him to travel through different regions and break the chains holding her there. Tallerico considers the game’s greatest strength to be its visual design. Its constantly changing environments, from forests to areas high above the clouds, combine echoes of Square Enix games with a painterly quality that sometimes recalls Studio Ghibli. Combat is less successful. Tallerico finds its mechanics and physics inconsistent and argues that Duskfade works much better when players are exploring, jumping, grappling, and riding rails than when they are fighting enemies. The story also improves as it progresses, gradually becoming a coming-of-age tale about a young man pushed into heroism for the first time. Overall, Tallerico presents Duskfade as a modest, attractive experience rather than a major long-term game, one whose $30 price and nostalgic design make it an appealing reminder of the platformers that helped define an earlier generation of gaming.

Kingdom Hearts
