Alexander Ullom on It Ends

Alexander Ullom discusses how It Ends grew from the simple idea of an endless road into a metaphor for the uncertainty of entering adulthood. The film follows four friends on an ordinary drive who realize that the road never ends and that whenever they stop, crowds of people rush from the woods toward their car. Rather than explaining where they are or why this is happening, Ullom keeps the focus on the characters and the different ways they respond to fear, uncertainty, and a future they can no longer predict. At the center of the film is the friendship between four young people who are beginning to sense that life after college may pull them in different directions. Ullom deliberately avoids turning the story into a puzzle that demands a clear solution. What matters more is the emotional condition created by the endless road and the way it reflects the experience of young adults suddenly faced with choices, responsibilities, and a life whose destination is unclear. The result blends hangout comedy with road horror while allowing its central metaphor to remain open rather than explaining it away.
