Late Fame and the Return of a Poet

Isaac Feldberg has interviewed Kent Jones for RogerEbert.com about his new film "Late Fame." Jones was a critic and a programmer before he began directing, and he ran the New York Film Festival from 2013 to 2019; this is his second narrative feature, after "Diane." Willem Dafoe plays Ed Saxberger, a poet who gave up writing long ago and now sorts other people's mail at the post office. A young man stops him in the street to say he has found Saxberger's old poetry collection and considers it an overlooked masterpiece. The encounter is enough to send Saxberger back to the question of what his work, and he himself, are worth. Greta Lee plays Gloria, a middle-aged theater actress who still aspires to the vanished glamour of the old screen divas and has settled instead for the role of resident tragedienne in a circle that calls itself the Enthusiasm Society. Her relationship with Saxberger is the emotional center of the film. Samy Burch, who wrote "May December," adapted the screenplay from a novella by the Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler, moving the story from 19th-century Vienna to present-day SoHo. In the interview Jones talks about his memories of the old SoHo, his move away from auteur theory, and why Gloria's cabaret number had to be Brecht and Weill rather than Rodgers and Hammerstein, staged with the anti-romantic plainness he admires in Fassbinder. "Late Fame" opened in select US theaters on August 7, 2026, from Magnolia Pictures.
