From Tarkovsky to “Silent Hill”

RogerEbert.com has published an excerpt from Scout Tafoya's new book, "The Otherworld: The Mythic Dimensions of Christophe Gans." In it Tafoya traces the influence of Andrei Tarkovsky through the "Silent Hill" games and through Gans' film adaptation. The visual language of the original game, made by Team Silent and released for the PlayStation in 1999, carries Tarkovsky's mark from the start: a floating camera, abandoned buildings lost in fog, a landscape that keeps rearranging itself, and creatures whose skin recalls the first crews sent in to fight the fires at Chernobyl. In "Solaris," an unknown planet alters Kelvin's perception and confronts him with the ghost of his dead wife; in "Silent Hill 2," James Sunderland's search for his own wife becomes a journey through memory, guilt and perception. The resemblance is not guesswork. On May 21, 2020, Team Silent designer Masahiro Ito wrote on Twitter that Lem's novel "Solaris" was among the books that inspired the story of the second game. Tafoya finds the same lineage in Gans' "Return to Silent Hill." James, played by Jeremy Irvine, travels through a ruined and contaminated landscape that borrows the existential searching of "Stalker," the floating continuity of memory in "Mirror" and the heartache of "Solaris." In both worlds, characters have no control over what they encounter, and the landscape becomes an extension of fear, guilt and memory. Tarkovsky died before Chernobyl, Tafoya notes, though all three of his films had foreseen it.
