In a review by Jason Victor Serinus, San Francisco Classical Voice takes up Houston Grand Opera's new recording of "Florencia en el Amazonas," the Spanish-language opera by the late Mexican composer Daniel Catán, inspired by Gabriel García Márquez's magical realism and, since its 1996 world premiere, one of the essential works of contemporary opera in the Americas. The high-resolution set captures the company's 2019 revival, conducted by Patrick Summers and directed by Francesca Zambello, with Ana María Martínez as Florencia Grimaldi, released on HGO's own label as a two-SACD set and in download formats. The libretto was written by Marcela Fuentes-Berain at Márquez's own request, drawing on the world of "Love in the Time of Cholera." The story unfolds aboard a steamboat on the Amazon. Florencia, a celebrated opera singer, returns to her homeland after years away to perform at the Manaus opera house while searching for her lost love, Cristóbal. Her voyage, and that of her fellow passengers, gradually turns from a geographic route into an inner journey through memory, love, longing, transformation, and the mysterious nature of the Amazon. The review treats the recording as a chance to hear the work's musical grandeur anew: an opera rich in orchestral color, dreamlike atmosphere, and love-drenched vocal writing, with so rapid a succession of solos, duets, and ensembles that, in the critic's words, listeners may need to come up for air. Under Summers, the HGO orchestra renders river, jungle, birds, and the characters' emotional turbulence as an audible fabric; at its center is Martínez, a singer long bound to Catán's world, who makes Florencia a woman suspended among fame, loneliness, and the longing to return; her final softly voiced note, the critic writes, is a special thing of beauty. The release matters beyond documenting a fine performance. "Florencia" is historic for Houston Grand Opera: an opera born of an American commission that spoke in Spanish, with Latin American imagination and a universal gaze on love and loss. Arriving as Patrick Summers's tenure as music director nears its end, the release carries a commemorative air. The verdict: this opera will become many an opera lover's guilty pleasure, all the melodic effulgence from Puccini through Strauss compressed into under two hours; and unless you're under doctor's orders to stick to Bach, indulge.
Florencia en el Amazonas
