Marina Herlop Readies New Album Dja Dja

Pitchfork reports that Catalan composer and experimental musician Marina Herlop is readying her new album "Dja Dja," the follow-up to 2023's "Nekkuja," which she will release independently for the first time on October 9. Alongside the announcement comes the new track "Jaque": a labyrinth of interlaced piano, brass, bass, and voices. According to the release notes, the fifteen-track album, pieced together slowly over three years, draws on the Hero's Journey, the well-known narrative framework Joseph Campbell laid out in "The Hero With a Thousand Faces." Herlop recorded most of the album at her home in Barcelona and traveled to Bali to record gamelan with local musicians, while incorporating orchestral brass into her palette for the first time, orchestrated from intuition. She has described the record as "a giant sudoku composed of smaller sudokus," a phrase true to her musical world: intricate structure, experimental sound, compositional precision, and free movement among traditions and unexpected forms. Herlop, known for singing in an invented language of her own and for drawing the attention of artists like Björk, has deliberately designed the release with almost no visual element; in an age of visual surplus, she says, she prefers to hand the picture back to the listener, and the only story she asks anyone to follow is the one the music tells itself.
