Greetings from London, where Banksy’s flag man is a warning cry

🎨 NPR Arts · July 4, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #10

In a dispatch by Vincent Ni, NPR turns to the newest work by famed street artist Banksy in London's Waterloo Place: a life-size statue that appeared overnight in late April and quickly became one of the city's most talked-about public artworks, so much so that local authorities ringed it with protective barriers. The statue depicts a man in a suit striding forward along the edge of a high plinth, flag hoisted proudly; the wind has blown the flag back across his face, so that he marches on unaware he is a single step from a perilous fall. Its placement among grand monuments celebrating Britain's past, at a moment when the country, and much of the world, is debating its way forward, sharpens both the work's meaning and its visual irony. Like many viewers, Ni asks whether the "flag man" is Banksy's warning about blind nationalism and the perils of unquestioning devotion to symbols, or a meditation on human shortsightedness. The work poses a simple but cutting question: when loyalty to a flag closes our eyes to what lies ahead, what awaits us? Whatever the message, NPR writes, the piece feels remarkably attuned to the mood of the present moment.
