Beyond The Pleasuredome: Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s Liverpool 40 Years On

In The Quietus, Wyndham Wallace looks back at Liverpool, the second and last album by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, released in 1986. Wallace argues that the record is more interesting than its reputation. After the playful excess of Welcome To The Pleasuredome in 1984, it has a darker, more political mood, set against the miners' strike, rising unemployment and Chernobyl. The album was a commercial and critical failure, with no UK number one and largely harsh reviews, though the single 'Rage Hard' reached number four. Wallace describes a band split between singer Holly Johnson and the other members, who wanted to be taken seriously as musicians, while the label ZTT put commercial interests first. He praises Johnson's class-conscious lyrics and names 'Is Anybody Out There' the album's highlight, while calling 'Watching the Wildlife' its low point. For Wallace, Liverpool is unfocused and often weak, yet it is a revealing record of a divided Britain, with moments of real fury and grace. Frankie Goes To Hollywood

Wikimedia Commons
