Fisherman’s Blues: Jeanie Finlay on All Rivers Spill Their Stories To The Sea

In The Quietus, Claire Sawers interviews filmmaker Jeanie Finlay about All Rivers Spill Their Stories To The Sea, her tenth feature documentary. The film looks at the pollution of UK waters and the mass death of sea life that began off Hartlepool and Teesside on 28 September 2021. Officials first blamed an algal bloom and later a 'novel pathogen', but fishermen and scientists suspect a cover-up. At its centre is fisherman Stan Rennie, whose family has fished for about 500 years and who helped found the North East Fishing Collective. Fishermen report a 95 percent drop in catches since 2021. The film links the crisis to Teesworks, a freeport zone backed by Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen. Finlay says the idea came through her mother, who joined a protest with a sign asking why the crabs died. She presents the film as an answer to patronising portrayals of working-class northern communities. It was screened at the Sea Change festival on Tiree, released the week of the interview, and longlisted for Best Feature Documentary at the 2026 British Independent Film Awards.

کلر ساورز [Claire Sawers] در The Quietus با جینی فینلی، فیلم‌ساز، دربارهٔ «All Rivers Spill Their Stories To The Sea»، دهمین مستند بلند او، گفت‌وگو می‌کند. Wikimedia Commons
