Always Proceed and Go Forward: Koji Yakusho Reflects on His Career at 70

🎬 MUBI Notebook · June 12, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #7

At 70, the great Japanese actor Kōji Yakusho looks back on a four-decade career in a wide-ranging conversation for MUBI's Notebook, recorded after he received the Golden Mulberry Lifetime Achievement Award at the Udine Far East Film Festival, presented to him by director Wim Wenders. Yakusho came to acting almost by chance and took his stage name from the Tokyo ward office where he once worked, then trained under the towering actor Tatsuya Nakadai, whom he calls his master and credits with teaching him everything about the craft. Over the years he has worked with many of Japan's leading directors and won international acclaim, from the gentle comedy Shall We Dance? to Kiyoshi Kurosawa's chilling Cure and Wenders's Perfect Days, which earned him the Best Actor prize at Cannes. In the interview he speaks about what still draws him to the work, describing the unplanned chemistry between actors and the energy that lives beyond the written script as his greatest joy. Warm, humble, and still curious, he remains eager to keep working both in front of and behind the camera.
