The Book of Mormon, the satirical Broadway musical created by South Park's Trey Parker and Matt Stone with composer Robert Lopez (a co-creator of Avenue Q), turned 15 this year. To mark the anniversary, original stars Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad reunited at the 2026 Tony Awards to perform once more as the two mismatched Mormon missionaries they first played in 2011. The show follows two young missionaries sent to a Ugandan village, using broad and sometimes offensive comedy to poke at faith and youthful naivety. In a Fresh Air conversation on NPR, Rannells and Gad looked back on the show that made them stars, the pressures of its sudden success, and why Gad insists that beneath the satire it is at heart a pro-faith and emotionally uplifting story. When it premiered in 2011, the musical won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Gad, Rannells, and several other original cast members are also making cameo appearances in the Broadway production this week.
