A declaration of independence for American filmmakers

🎬 RogerEbert.com · July 11, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #11

Writing for RogerEbert.com, Matt Zoller Seitz uses the United States' 250th anniversary to compare the current state of American cinema with the period around the 1976 bicentennial. He recalls how films such as Nashville, Taxi Driver, Killer of Sheep, Rocky, Chinatown, and The Godfather confronted American history and identity during another troubled era, many of them made outside the studio system. Despite today's media consolidation and commercial pressure, he argues there are concrete reasons for optimism: box office may return to pre-pandemic levels this year, Gen Z has become the most devoted theatrical audience, repertory houses and microcinemas are thriving, and platforms like YouTube have become launching pads for independent filmmakers. Seitz concludes that independent filmmakers can shape a new moment for American cinema, telling them their time is now.
