A City of Transformations: Slovak Stories in The Book of Bratislava

📖 Asymptote Journal · June 12, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #7

This Asymptote review introduces The Book of Bratislava, a new anthology of Slovak short fiction published by the British press Comma Press as part of its Reading the City series. Edited by translator Júlia Sherwood and scholar Radoslav Passia, the collection gathers ten stories by ten writers, five women and five men across several generations, each rendered by a different translator. Together the stories trace the many lives of the Slovak capital across the twentieth century and into the present: a city emerging hopeful from Nazi occupation, then an outpost of communist Czechoslovakia thick with informers, and finally the capital of a new democratic state still defining itself. The review takes transformation as its theme, following how the book moves from the dive bars of the Petržalka housing estate to the leafy banks of the Danube, where past and present keep arguing with each other, trying to hold on to what is disappearing even as the city races to change. For English-language readers, most of these voices appear in translation for the first time, opening a window onto a literary culture still little known abroad.
