Translation Tuesday: Anne-Marie Albiach’s The Mezzanine in English

📖 Asymptote Journal · June 12, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #7

For its Translation Tuesday feature, Asymptote presents an excerpt from The Mezzanine, a novel by the celebrated French poet Anne-Marie Albiach, in a new translation by Teresa Villa-Ignacio due out this fall. Albiach, who died in 2012, was one of the most influential figures in contemporary French poetry, known for stripping personal experience down to something austere and impersonal and for breaking with ordinary syntax and the conventional use of the page. The Mezzanine carries that sensibility into prose. Its protagonist, Catarina Quia, closely resembles Albiach herself, and the narrative slips between "I" and "she" within a single sentence, blurring the line between fiction and autobiography. In her note, the translator describes how she had to grow accustomed to that slippage before realizing it was the very thing that made the book possible, and how she listened closely to the rhythm and sound of the French to find equivalents in English. The excerpt itself is intense and inward, the voice of a woman for whom writing has become the only thing holding death at bay.
