When Opera Meets Hip-Hop

🎼 SF Classical Voice · August 31, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #18

Nigerian American baritone Babatunde Akinboboye has built a new musical approach he calls Hip Hopera, fusing classical opera with hip-hop. The idea gained international attention in 2018 when his video combining Rossini’s Largo al Factotum with Kendrick Lamar’s HUMBLE. received more than 10 million views. Akinboboye, whose operatic career has included appearances with Los Angeles Opera, Opera Santa Barbara, and Long Beach Opera, says he grew up deeply immersed in hip-hop and later encountered classical music through that musical perspective. He believes classical music institutions have sometimes focused too much on telling audiences what they ought to appreciate rather than discovering what genuinely connects with them. In Hip Hopera, the melody and emotional character of a piece determine the beat, while his vocal approach becomes more rhythmically pointed than traditional legato operatic singing. Sharp cutoffs, stronger accents, and even deliberately sacrificing a beautiful tone can become tools for expressing anger or sadness. Akinboboye hopes the genre can offer new listeners a path into classical music while giving classical musicians permission to use their instruments in ways that feel enjoyable and personally meaningful, without necessarily seeking approval from established institutions or traditional gatekeepers.
